Canada is one of the world’s largest exporters of agricultural commodities, and a global centre for innovation in agritech. Luis and his team knew this very well and started the journey of Infinite Harvest Technologies a couple of years ago in Toronto.
They are a feed ingredient company that bio-transforms crop and food waste into insect proteins for aquaculture and pet food, using Black Soldier Fly Larvae. They are building an agribusiness cluster around insect production – crop & food waste, feed manufacturers, aquaculture operations – with investment opportunities and export potential.
With operations in Colombia and Chile, they are exploding the huge potential that the Canadian agricultural industry has to offer.
“The animal feed market is pretty interesting. Why is that? Because the animal feed market depends on many, many locations around the world to provide the ingredients. The new consumers are really looking at sustainable feed for their pets, and that’s where we come in”, says Luis with high confidence that there’s an untapped market ready to take advantage from. “Just the market for proteins in the pet industry is over 10 billion dollars a year.”
Of course, Toronto represented an opportunity not to leave aside in their strategy. Ontario serves as a hub to reach other markets inside Canada that can benefit from Infinite Harvest technology processes.
Luis highlights the most important assets that made him take the decision of setting up shop in the six through LatAm Startups. “We are looking at the different skills that are going to be important as we grow globally from Canada, and the other one is the access to capital, right? I think LatAm Startups offers the platform for companies like ours that are based initially in Latin America, and wants to spend into the world as a good platform to get into the market.”
Luis was born and raised in Colombia and has been a Canadian citizen for over fifteen years, which made him qualify for the pilot of the Newcomer Entrepreneur Accelerator (NEA) program.
